New York Implements Tight Security Measures After Threatening Messages Ahead of T20 World Cup

Stringent security measures are being implemented in New York during the ICC T20 World Cup matches between the United States and the West Indies due to security threats.

According to Reuters, the Governor of New York announced on Wednesday that security in the city would be heightened for the T20 World Cup. Security around New York’s stadiums, especially regarding matches involving Pakistan and India, will be particularly intensified due to threatening messages received.

Governor Kathy Hochul stated in her post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that her team is working closely with federal and law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of spectators. She further emphasized that there are currently no specific security threats.

According to ABC News, the New York Police Department stated that tournaments and related events in New York could provide an opportunity for violent extremists. The police also mentioned that ISIS supporters’ propaganda exacerbates security concerns, especially regarding matches involving Pakistan and India.

Commissioner Patrick Ryder of the Nassau County Police stated that threatening messages were sent by the ISIS Khorasan group in April regarding the World Cup, particularly highlighting security threats related to matches between Pakistan and India.

Governor Hochul further revealed that the New York Police have been directed to deploy heavy manpower for monitoring and screening.

It’s worth noting that a total of 55 matches will be played in the T20 World Cup, with 16 matches hosted in the United States across three cities. Eight of these matches will be played at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York, including the Pakistan-India match scheduled for June 9th.
